Love is Unshakeable

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how we deal with our own personal issues, our “secret” sin. It’s something that affects everybody to different extents. When we face a trial or we’re going through a hard time, we can go to God in total confidence, knowing that He is our cornerstone and He will comfort us, we can go to our close friends, our pastors, anybody who can comfort us a bit and help us get through whatever it is that we are struggling with.
But what about when it gets more personal, what about when what it is we are facing becomes something that we don’t want to share with people any more, it becomes something that we want to keep hidden from the world, a phrase I’ve heard a lot – we simply just want to ‘brush it under the mat.’ 
This might sound a bit odd, but work with me here… think of that mat as your life. There will almost certainly be a time in your life where you face a problem or issue that you want to hide away underneath the mat, where nobody else can see it.
Sometimes the problem you’re facing can feel so embarrassing that you just couldn’t tell anybody anymore because you’re afraid of what they might think of you, you don’t want to think about it anymore because it embarrasses you and makes you feel bad inside when you think about it, you just brush it under the mat. In your head you try to deny that the problem is even there, all the while the problem is actually getting bigger, and the pile under your mat is getting bigger. Whenever the pile under a mat gets bigger, it becomes more obvious too.
As much as we can try to deny that there’s something wrong and that we’re totally fine. It’s become obvious to other people that something is up. I know from my own life especially that when I’m going through a difficult struggle in my private life that people who I’m close to know that there’s something wrong, because it affects the way I get on around them.
Regardless of how “out of hand” anything in our lives get, regardless of how embarrassing they seem and regardless of how much we want to supress it. God wants to help, He wants to intervene and He will get you through whatever you’re struggling with!  We just need to give our worries and our problems to God and He will intervene to help us fix whatever is wrong in our lives. Love is unshakeable!

Psalm 55:22 tells u to cast all of our worries on the Lord, so whenever we face a problem in our private lives, don’t supress it – cast that burden on to God, there is huge power in prayer, power much greater than any situation you’ll ever face! And through God’s unshakeable love, there isn’t one thing the devil can throw at us that we cannot overcome!
He loves you, so so much. Don’t supress your struggles, give them all to Him – the one who gave it all for us.

Hands and Feet - Rising Up And Reaching Out

We live in a hurting world. Whether it’s struggling to survive in a time where unemployment, homelessness and poverty are at an all time high; struggling to find any joy in life when it seems to be over running them; or just struggling to fit in, feeling isolated and unwanted. People are hurting. Every day you’ll come across people who feel like there is no hope, no joy, and no comfort. Most of the time we notice them, feel sorry for them, and pray that someone will reach out to them and show them love. But haven’t we been called to ease the pain?


I mean Jesus when asked what the most important commandments are says “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark 12:31) so even at that it’s obvious that we need to show love to people, but God has called us to reach out into the world and try to make a difference. In Matthew 25 Jesus talking to those he describes as righteous says, “For I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you invited me into your home. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was sick and you cared for me. I was in prison and you visited me.” The people go on to ask him why they did this to him and he replies, “I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.” You see Gods heart breaks for the broken, and he wants to show love to all people but sometimes we forget that it is us, the people of God, that need to supply that love to others.


We can reach out to people in the smallest ways, and it can make a big difference. How many times have you not known anybody in a room and just wished someone would come and talk to you? And if someone does, even just to check your ok, how awesome does it feel? And you are probably someone who is happy, has friends, and isn’t feeling alone. Imagine if someone is feeling isolated, alone, and unwanted, and you go over to talk to them. That tiny gesture could make them feel loved. What about the single mother, or the old couple, or guy down your street who just needs help with something? You’d be surprised how blessed you would be to be a blessing to them and give them the help they need. And what about the thing we see in movies, when someone’s car breaks down and people stop to help them out? Wouldn’t it be cool to be those people? Or maybe you have a bit of money spare and there is a homeless person who could really use a meal. Look those are just some simple suggestions, easy ways that we could reach out to people but what if God wanted you to do more...


We sing a song sometimes called Hosanna, which has the line “Break my heart for what breaks yours”, and most of the time we sing it without really meaning it but remember how much Gods heart breaks for people, and if we are truly striving to know more of God and draw closer to him we are going to have to get used to our hearts hurting for the hurt too...


Just think of the difference we could make in this world by just sharing Gods love one person at a time. So let us be people who rise up and take our place, called by God to be a light in the darkness through our actions. Let’s try to be people that want to reach out to others. And remember that God wants to show love to the outcast, the hurting and the broken, but that he wants to do it through us.

Let us be his Hands and Feet.

Colossal 2012


'Pressing On'

John 3:16, probably one of the most recognised, famous, used and quoted passage of the Bible, for it tells us "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (NIV)


And indeed this is true, for when we gave our lives to Christ we secured our place in Heaven and never needed to worry about anything ever again, in the way we lived or acted towards oneself and others, for we already knew we were heading to Heaven when we passed...wrong.


None of us are perfect, none of us can say that we abide by all our Lord God shares with us throughout the Bible, however just because we know we're going to Heaven doesn't mean we just sit back and wait, watch the world go by, sit in listening to news bulletins of war breaking out or natural disasters tearing whole cities apart, absolutely not. 

In Philipians 3:12 - 21, Paul speaks on Pressing on Toward the Goal. Verses 12 - 16 say the following "Not that I have already obtained all of this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I don not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained".


I wish to speak on verse 16 in particular, for we must live up to what we have already attained, now that don't mean packing a suitcase and booking the next flight to a thrid world country in order to help spread God's word (would be awesome if you did that, but first you're going to need a plan of action).
We are not perfect, but that's why God took hold of us, so as to slowly sculpt and mould us into His image, if we were perfect then there would be nothing He could do with us as we would be flawless human beings, and how boring would that be becuase then we would be missing out on all God wants to share with us and reveal to us. Even through hardships, trials and troubles God still continues to shape us, He doesn't look at the situation and think "Oh he or she is going through a rough patch at the moment, I'll come back later". No, God stays with us always, and sometimes in times of trial is when God reveals Himself to us the most as we're reliant on His strength to carry us through the storm to saefty.


Philipians 2:12 - 13 says "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed - not only in my prsence, but now much more in my absence - continue to work out you salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose".
Being a Christian is not an easy life, it is a life filled with constant trials and tribulations, but with the help of God's word, and prayer, and with the help of our fellow friends and family we can push on towards our goal and this goal can not be achieved by oursleves, for I myself have tried to go it alone but even in those times God found me and I thank Him and love Him for it. 


So it's not about and never will be about how far we've come on our journey. What matters is where we're going. It's not about trying to be the best or have the most intellect. What matters is what we're doing with what God's given us. It's not about looking back and all you've done in the past. What matters is looking forward towards the goal and smiling at what all God is going to do for you in the future. And remembering all He has done for you already.


Doesn't matter how long we have been saved, for we can have confidence in knowing (even through the hardships) that we are not who we once were thanks to God. But we are still to become what we've been called to be.

Inside Out Bus: BBC News article

David Ford tries mixingJustice Minister David Ford had a go at mixing on the Inside Out Bus


Money seized from criminals has been put towards a bus equipped with a high-tech music studio in an effort to steer young people away from becoming involved in crime in east Belfast.
The Inside Out bus, developed by Dundonald Elim Church, has brand-new computers and mixing equipment.
The Department of Justice provided £90,000 towards the project by using money recovered from criminal assets.
Justice Minister David Ford got a chance to try his hand at some of the activities on offer, and he said it was good that local teenagers would have the opportunity to to try something new and develop new skills.

"It's all a matter of looking for different kinds of activities to divert young people from anti-social behaviour, give them something constructive to do and thereby help reduce low-level crime and indeed the fear of crime," he said.
Pastor Phil Hills said they had bought the former London red bus and fitted it out with computers and musical instruments.
"It has a large screen facing the doors to attract kids inside, and it's wheelchair accessible," he said.
"It also has games consoles so kids can chill out."
Youth worker Craig Brotherston said: "Ultimately the aim is to build some relationships with teenagers and try to keep them off the streets or help them get their lives in check."

Victorious People living Victorious Lives

I believe in God therefore I’m victorious. I love Jesus therefore I’m victorious. I worship in church no matter if everyone is watching therefore I’m victorious, and I go to church, 4:12, bible studies and whatever else is on surely I’m victorious?


You are not victorious! Just kidding, of course you are! Jesus Christ went to the cross to ensure that through Him we are a victorious people. Saying that, this isn’t the point that I’m trying to convey. The noun definition of ‘victory’ is stated below:

“An act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition: "an election victory"

As Christians that is what Jesus achieved for us on the cross, victory over death. I assume the majority of people know that. You might be thinking “cut to the point already!!” OK I will. In hardships, bullying, abuse, real times of trouble, when you as an individual are at your lowest, perhaps a family member passes from you, a best friend walks away from God or the things of God, your parents are having a tough time at the minute, maybe financially or with one another or maybe you’re just down, you’re a little bit sad because of some more personal issues in your life. Does God want us to live a defeated life? To not worship Him as much because of your life situation? I really don’t believe so.


Throughout the bible God makes it clear to us that He wants His people to live victorious lives, we always get the first part of Victorious people but sometimes not the second part. It can be easy to stomp your foot and clap your hands on a Friday night singing, “If God be for who can be against me?” when really when you get home and you sit down or lie down in bed, everything seems to be against you.


When we look at the life of Paul we see a man filled with so much love, peace, grace and kindness. Other than that what was really so special about him? What really appeals to people about Paul? Why when you get asked the question “If you could have dinner with 3 people who would they be?” most of the time one of the answers would be Paul? Why? What is it about this ‘dude’? There’s quite a simple explanation of why he’s so admired, of course there’s a whole lot of theology in there also but to us, to young people living in the 21st century lifestyle, with everything that comes along with that. Why is it? Paul knew he was victorious and he backed it up by living a victorious life. Pretty simple explanation, pretty obvious too.

A plain old geezer that had an encounter on Damascus Road (Acts 9) knew what it was to believe in Jesus and from that point onward no matter what he lived a victorious life. He went to prison and wrote letters about love to the church in Corinth, how nuts is that? The last thing I’d be doing in prison is writing love letters to church!! Incredible!

Paul simply knew what it was to suffer for the cause of Christ and through his suffering Jesus was lifted higher and higher and higher. He was a victorious man living a victorious life and people knew him for it, do you think the people in the church were thinking “poor wee Paul, he’s heartbroken in that wee prison”? No way! The same guy that said “To live is Christ and to die is gain”. He took every opportunity he could to elevate the name of Jesus in his life and from that he lived a victorious life. If you’re suffering at the minute whether it’s one situation or another, YOU are VICTORIOUS. The caps are necessary. Jesus Christ went to the cross to conquer death and every life situation you face. Nothing too small and nothing to big for God.


Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

You my friend have overcome, live it out in your life today.

Exam Time!

For some of you that doesn’t mean a great deal, but for most of you it probably means time to get stressed out! So let’s hope this helps.....

Is God really in control? What do you believe? Exams can be an extremely stressful time, as Christians, one of the things that we can count on during exams is that we have a God who loves us and is with us all the time.

Exam time can be really tough when it comes to finding some time with God or even when you’re trying to focus on God throughout it all; exams seem to get in the way of everything. So much revision, so many exams and so many people expecting you to do really well! Sometimes it can feel like it’s just too much to cope with.
If you can completely believe that God is in control then there is no reason to worry, or in some cases; FREAK OUT!

In Philippians 4:6-9 it tells us this;
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things.  9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you."

Peace of mind is definitely something that you want during the next month or so. No one wants to spend every minute of everyday worrying about whether they got that 10 mark question right or wrong! In verse 6 we’re told “Do not be anxious about anything”, God doesn’t tell us things like this is we can’t do it. If you focus on YOUR strength and all of YOUR attributes, of course you’ll panic; of course you’ll become stressed!
How about focusing on God and the Holy Spirit that lives inside of you? The Holy Spirit gives you the power to have amazing Faith, with the Holy Spirit you will be able to trust God beyond YOUR ability and with this will come peace! No more freaking out!

However, even if you continue to worry and get completely stressed out over this next while. God is in total control!

I’ve seen my friends panic time and time again over GCSE results, AS levels, A levels and whether or not they are going to get into the university they wanted. Sometimes it hasn’t turned out the way they expected but over time they’ve came to realise that God has this amazing plan for their lives and it’s what he wants.

So try to relax and focus on God throughout this next month. Even if you can’t relax and you’re going to continue to be stressed for a while just remember one thing.....
GOD IS IN CONTROL.

Revive 2012


Revive Youth weekend took place this year on the 27th and 28th of April with a change of venue, moving from New Life City Church to Dundonald Elim. The hype had started a few days before with many young people excited to see what God was going to do, after the amazing experience they had at the last Revive. It’s safe to say no one was disappointed!

We were glad once again to have the Relentless Band leading us in worship over the weekend. Again and again they continue to show how blessed they are with the talents God has given them, once again they set the mood brilliantly in worship and helped many of the young people engage with God.
We also had the privilege of having Guest Speaker Kevin Peat over for the weekend. Kevin has been a member of the National Leadership Team since 2000. He is Regional Leader in Scotland, the North West of England and North Wales.

The theme for this year’s Revive was the Father Heart of God, and it’s safe to say that God really used Kevin over the weekend to break down walls in the hearts and minds of the young people towards their Father God. The young people really responded to what Kevin had to say on both the Friday night and Saturday morning and it was great to see many of them understanding with both their ‘Minds and Hearts’ the real meaning of God being their Father.

On the Saturday night to say we had a ‘celebration’ and that God turned up would be an understatement. The idea was to have more of a worship session with a few testimonies in the middle and to celebrate what God was doing in each of those situations. However, what started with a few people giving testimony to what God had done for them ended up being well over 50 people! To hear what God was doing or what God had done in those situations was just mind blowing. Many young people were giving testimony for the first time and it was amazing to see that they just wanted to celebrate what God had done in their lives!

Over the two days we experienced God working and breaking down ‘walls’ in people’s lives. We want to thank everyone that was involved and again a big thank you must go out to Kevin Peat for joining us over the weekend. A final thank you to God who showed up, moved mightily over the two days and continues to change the lives of many young people throughout Ireland.

Friday
** Starts at 7:30pm at the church...
** Half an hour to get food after the meeting...
** Sleepover with doors locked at 11:30pm...


Saturday Morn
** Breakfast at 8:30am
** Meeting at 10am
** Workshops at 11:45am


** 1pm-5pm is your own FREE TIME, so you can make arrangements with your parents as to whether you are allowed to hang out somewhere in Dundonald, or if you have to go home for the afternoon :)

Saturday Evening
** Evening meeting at 7:30pm

Let's worship the One who carries us...

Hey! It’s been a while, here’s a little devotion for you all!

I was just thinking about the Israelites and how they have a bit of history with worshipping idols! Hopefully everyone knows at least a bit about this. If you don’t....get reading exodus!

Exodus 32:4-6 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”5Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!”6The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.

So when was the last time you decided to make your own God out of Gold or wood? Hopefully never!  How about the last time you carved out time for your favourite band, sport, the internet, shopping or even T.V? Well that’s ok! 

However idolatry does happen today. The surprising thing is that it could be in your life and you don’t even realise. You probably don’t actually know people who get on their knees and worship statues, but anyone who gives excessive devotion to something besides God is worshipping an idol.

Worship usually involves a few things; Admiration, public expression and service.  Who or what do you admire? Is it worth admiring? What are you excited to tell people about? How do you spend most of your time? How long have you spent on Facebook or watching T.V this week? Are you getting a wee bit too excited about the fact that a celebrity is now following you on twitter?

Is there anything in your life that you would consider an idol, something apart from God that dominates your admiration, expression and service? Is God your one and only?
 Take some time today to sit down and think about what you could be tempted to idolize in your life. Don’t get me wrong, you’re allowed to have hobbies and enjoy different things, but are they controlling you? Do they dictate your time and energy? 

Thank God for allowing you to enjoy those things in your life but let’s commit to making him number one. 

Let’s worship the one who carries us and not the things we can carry!
