A baby came... and everything changed?

So here we are again, in the words of the famous Andy Williams, 'It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year', a season of excitement, happy smiling faces, meeting up with family, trips to the market, cold days, hot chocolate, buying gifts, watching Christmas movies, and hanging out with friends. A season we all look forward to.

But with this season comes some hassles. With the Christmas holiday comes the fun of either pre-Christmas assignments or post-Christmas exams (or if you're really lucky, both!) Usually, although there is a buzz of the excitement of Christmas, there is also a stressful time, with the amount of work to get done coming up to Christmas, or the work that needs done over the holiday period. And the typical message that comes around at Christmas, is the cheesy, yet true phrase, "Jesus is the reason for the season"...sounds like it should be printed on the side of a Metro Bus!

But my message in this is slightly different, although Jesus IS truly the reason for this Christmas season, what Jesus brings is also very important - "JOY is the reason for the season!"

It's not well documented, but I am an avid fan of Christmas (I know, you would never have guessed), but I was recently listening to Christmas music (as I have been since the 7th July this year) and I came across the song by Eddie Kirkland called 'Everything Changed'. Many of you have heard it before, if not, it's on the 4.12 Christmas CD, so get yourselves one of them. There is a line in it that say,

"A Baby came and Everything Changed"

It's a very beautiful Christmas song, but this line really gripped me recently...'a baby came and EVERYTHING CHANGED!'. When Jesus came into this world, everything that people did wrong in the past, present and future has changed, their sinning, their wrongdoing, their hurt, their injustice, their stresses, worries and anxieties, their broken relationships, their hurt and pain, this all had changed with the arrival of Jesus Christ.

And this is the message I want us to get, that because of Christmas, everything has changed! And the main point of excitement is that with this change that Jesus has brought, we don't face these things alone, Jesus has brought the change and He is the one in control.

I don't know about you, but this is such a relief to me, that Jesus is in control of every area of my life, and because He came, everything in my life has changed. This thought gives me so much Joy, and this is the real reason of this season, the Joy and Hope that Jesus brought when He came into this world.

So this Christmas season, please do enjoy all the fun and festivities that come with Christmas, the fun & fellowship with friends, the countless Christmas carols and Christmas productions on, all the great movies on show, the delicious food and drink that only comes out this time of year, but don't forget to make this a season of Joy, that you can delight in that fact that because A baby was born, Everything Changed.

4:12 Christmas Community Project

Christmas Community Project 2013
During the year at some stage - we always try to reach out to our community in different ways...
We have had a number of different successful attempts over the last couple of years to reach a number of houses in the Dundonald area with a simple gesture to let them know that the church is here for them.

This year we would love to give something to EVERY HOUSEHOLD in the Dundonald BT16 area.  That is about 7000 homes!  We would love to hand deliver something chocolate to every house and just let them know that the church cares...

For this we need your help:

1.  MONEY - It will cost about £2000 to successfully purchase that much chocolate!
With over 100 young people every week at 4:12 - that is only £20 a person between now and Christmas?  Could you help towards reaching out to our community?

2.  TIME - We will need a lot of willing helpers to deliver and engage with the community at their front doors - could you give us a couple of hours of your time before Christmas?  We will have sign up sheets on Friday night where you can sign up for a time slot - and we will attempt to hit every house in Dundonald!

I know we can do it!  Let's make a difference this Christmas in our community!

The Dents Along The Way

We all experience the trials and tribulations of life, they are (some would say unfortunately) the way in which we grow, gain wisdom and better ourselves.
I am reminded in this context of a quote from Homer Simpson, "marriage is like a car, you get dents and dings, and America can't build one that lasts more than five years". Now I wouldn't agree with the last part, but this is definitely a good way of viewing how we go through life. How we deal with the dents and dings in our own lives determine the type of person who we become.

So how does this compare to our relationship with Christ. Hebrews 4:15 says "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."
In our relationship with Christ, it is natural to feel that we are not hitting the mark, that we have fallen short or that we do not Christ has let us down. Well, Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:15, that he was the worst of all sinners, and that Christ came into the world to save sinners him, and us. This being the case, why should we look at ourselves as being any different from Paul? And since this is the case, why do so many Christians continually feel that their relationship with Christ is not in the place that they want it to be.

Like any marriage or relationship, you get out of it what ever you put into it. Our Christian walk is the same, Jesus is not looking for people who only want to go to him when they are having problems. He wants them to come to him in all circumstances and situations.

So what am I getting at, what can we take away? I would challenge each and everyone of you to not just give God a mention here and there in your lives, but to allow him to completely mould you in every situation faced on a daily basis. Not just when you face challenges with family and friends, but with education, driving, getting up in the morning, paranoia, delusions, worries of all kinds. As Hebrews tells us, Christ can sympathise with us no matter what we face. Quiet time is not just for you to read God's word and get something so you can face the day, it's for God to speak to you, to point out where you are going wrong and move your heart to correct yourself.

Whatever Wherever However

Video about church planting from Friday night...

Wherever Whatever However from Moving Works on Vimeo.

Monday, October 7, 2013

Thank You!

Just wanted to round off a great weekend with some thoughts:

Philippians 1:3-6 states,

3 Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. 4 Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, 5 for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. 6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Paul is writing and he gives thanks for the saints in Philippi.

On Friday night we celebrated 5 years of '4:12.' We took a night to celebrate what God has done, and how faithful and good He has been. It has been such a privilege to be a part of it.

And as we move forward in God - and what He is doing, I just want to mention a couple of things from these verses:

GIVE THANKS

I don't think that Paul is blind to who people are, or that he genuinely doesn't notice any of their faults.  So isn't it interesting that EVERYTIME he thinks of them - He gives thanks to God.  When I think back on the last five years - I give thanks to God for each of you!  You all bring something different and unique, and that makes the body of Christ what it is!

REQUESTS WITH JOY

I don't pray for you all everyday!  But whenever I do pray for you - I am able to bring my requests to God filled with joy - knowing that your life matters, and that the requests are brought to a God who is changing you from glory to glory... apparently He can make a difference in your life!

PARTNERS

That is what we are.  Not even just us - but the body of Christ worldwide!  My brothers and sisters in Egypt, USA, South Africa, West Belfast, Russia and all over the world.  Partners in spreading the Good News!  Here Paul is writing to a specific location - Philippi.  He gives thanks, brings his requests to God with joy - because of his partners in the Gospel.  I am grateful for the partners that God has given us in sharing the Good News these last 5 years!

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

Paul talks about his certainty that as you look towards the future - God will continue His good work within you until it is finally finished!  I am so thankful for the good work that God has started in us - but also thankful that He will continue His good work!

As we look forward we are thankful for the partners in sharing the Good News that God has placed around us!  And looking forward to the future as He continues His good work within all of you!

And remembering that 'This Gospel is too glorious to be content with past achievements!'

Just what could God allow us to be a part of in the future...

Let's keep loving and serving with grateful hearts.  Thank you Jesus!

What a life you have given us!

4:12 5th Anniversary Night

Wow!

I actually can't believe it has been 5 years of 4:12!

For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. [Psalm 100:5]

On Friday 4th October we want to celebrate 5 years of God's faithfulness to us!  There will be lots of memories, fun, celebration, food on the night.

But most importantly - we will be inviting some people we haven't seen in a long time, and some people who have never surrendered their lives to Jesus, and hopefully some new people as well - who are interested in 4:12!

Could you join with us in 2 ways:

1.  Could you encourage people to come?
Some of the people that you know that have been to 4:12 some time in the past?  Or maybe some new people - who need a good excuse to come?

2.  Could you pray?
Pray that we would see people re-dedicate their lives back to Jesus?  Or surrender their lives for the first time?  Or pray that people whose hearts have grown cold - would give it all to Jesus?

We have two weeks to go - will you join with us?

Can't wait to celebrate with you all!

'This Is Who I Am'

Hungry Hippos

Hunger dictates everything. It doesn't fade into the wind, nor does it pass in a moment. But pure, raw hunger can be the inspiration and motivation for many an action...

Remember that time you left the house on an empty stomach? Or hey, maybe you even skipped lunch too that day?! Come 2/3pm you're CRAVING a nandos right? You've got that mighty pain in the depths of your stomach that just won't leave til you answer it. We've all been there. Jesus too. But His type of hunger looked a little bit different to ours.

Bang in the middle of John 4, Jesus has had a crazy morning. Travelling all the way from Judea to Samaria, John tells us "Tired as He was from the journey, He sat down by the well." (v6) After polishing up His conversation with the Samaritan women, the disciples, as per usual, are asserting that they know best!

"His disciples urged Him, 'Rabbi, eat something." (v31)

However! Although He's probably worked up an appetite, Jesus once again hits us with more than food for thought!

"I have food to eat that you know nothing about... My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work..." (v32-34)

Wow! Stay with me here for a second... Is Jesus saying that doing God's will is more important than food? In extreme cases, people have reportedly survived up to 60 days or 44 days without food, like David Blaine's mental glass box stunt in London. But what is certain, without food you're gonna die...

Here's where Jesus is one step ahead. He's not neglecting the importance of food, or a wee fish supper. Like c'mon guys, He's fully God, fully man, the lad knows He's gotta eat. But in that moment His agenda was eternity.
The woman from the well has just returned with tons of people from her town to come see the Messiah. If Jesus had have moved on and cooked lunch elsewhere with the team. He would have missed the evangelistic opportunity which was at hand.

John writes that because of this, "many became believers" (v41)

Thats how important God's will is. Our saviour felt the hunger pain to do the will of God rather than fulfil a requirement to human existence. How much do you hunger for God's will for your life? Is it at the top of your agenda? The very meaning of your existence? Because sometimes, I selfishly pursue my plans for the day, sometimes I push past the life changing opportunities, and even sometimes I think my wants are of upmost importance.

So my friends, what I leave with you is this. Maybe God's will for your today is more than simply surviving. Maybe at school today God wants to change your focus; rather than eating lunch maybe He wants you to sit and chat with that guy that's always alone. Or maybe stay 5 minutes after work and comfort that person who's hurting...

I don't know what God's will is for your today. But what I do know is this;
God wants to use your today to affect someone's forever.

This Is Who I Am

New series at 4:12...

'IMMERSED'

We have an exciting new event starting this Sunday night after church called, 'IMMERSED'.

As christians, we know that we are on a life-long pursuit to knowing and becoming more like Jesus!  We want less of us - and more of Him!  I don't know about you - but I want to be IMMERSED in God, and the things of God, and the presence of God, and the Word of God... you get my point!
Anybody with me?

IMMERSED will be once a month on a Sunday night after church from 8:30pm - 9:30pm.
Each month will look at a specific topic together... for example our first night we will be looking at how to study the Bible better (or study it at all!)

It will also be age specific... the 2nd Sunday of every month the 6th year + age group will meet.  The 3rd Sunday of every month the 1-5th year will meet.

We would love to see you there!

The first 2 dates are:

Food Bank

Hey guys!

We will be collecting food on Friday nights for Food Bank as well as on Sundays at church if you wish to contribute...
Here is a list of products they need:

They need a lot more food before they can even get started - so don't feel like your items aren't making difference!  Together, we can make a huge dent in this :)

And if any of you want to volunteer some of your time - make sure you speak to John Lowry.
